What's a holiday without abit rain?

Last weekend I had time off work so me and the boyfriend decided to book a last minute weekend away. We are in the process of trying to save for a house so we didn't want to stay somewhere too costly and spend lots thinking 'that could have bought us a kettle, toaster, microwave....'
We love holidaying in Scotland so decided to head back to Fort William in the hope of seeing some snow and head for some good long walks.
So it pretty much rained the whole time we were there. What can you expect in February though huh?
We did have a lovely drive north of fort William following the shores of Loch Ness to Urquhart Castle. It rained pretty much the he whole time we were in the car but it stopped for the time we were outside! High5.

I did think there was more to the castle than what was there but sadly the poor thing had been through many battles and changes of owners over the past few hundred years and it was left to burn to the ground by the last people to live there (this was years ago in 1692, not just last year!) It was really well set out with a nice visitor centre and cafe with good homemade bakes and lots of information boards all around to give you the history. For it being a very cold, windy, wet day there was actually a good amount of tourists there. I would recommend a visit for some good scottish history and to see some pretty views down Loch Ness.

On our way home we stopped at Fort Augustus and went for a little walk. My parents visited here last spring and recommended it. It was very quiet here apart from the odd coach stopping with tourists to take pictures. Fort Augustus is famed for its locks linking the Caledonian canal to Loch Ness and I bet they are amazing when a boat passes through. Sadly today there was no boats to see. The parentals said its so pretty when it's a nice day and everyone sits along the canal at the pubs and having lunches whilst watching the boats pass through. Just sad I never witnessed it.

On the Sunday we went for a drive up Glen Nevis and drove up to the car park where you park to climb Ben Nevis. It was peeing with rain so we sat in the car whilst my boyfriend pointed out the route they went when they climbed it. Kinda bummed it was raining so we never went out and explored. We did pass a group of highland cows in the middle of the road looking all cold. So cute though.

For all you geography geeks out there. Here is Glen Roy. Doesn't look like much but if u look closely you wills see lines along the hills. "Aren't they just tracks?" I hear you cry. Nope. They are at the exact same height on both sides of the valley and are evidence of the height level of lakes during the last ice age. The 3 different lines are the marks of the shoreline of each lake level as it got smaller.
If you are still confused at my explanation. This explains it better http://youtu.be/1A3Pq2TXKEU (nice video for you, it's like a geography lesson for all)
Anyway, it's really rare to see this anywhere in the world so defo worth a visit to say you've been.
Here's a picture my boyfriend took of his car to make it look like a car ad. Whatever. Ha.

Apart from the weather, which didn't let us out as much as we'd like, id thoroughly recommend a visit to fort William as a base camp whither it is to go Nessie spotting, go skiing, visit the beaches, visit glenfinnan to see the Harry potter bridge, or climb Ben Nevis.

I love Scotland and it's beautifulness.

K xx
